Social Security Administration during COVID-19

Due to the current coronavirus crisis, all Social Security Administration (SSA) offices are currently closed until further notice. SSA business is being conducted remotely either online or by telephone.

Online services: To take any steps related to your SSA account or to apply for benefits, create an online account called “my Social Security” on the SSA website.   

After you set up your account, you can:

  • Review your benefits
  • Apply for benefits
  • Check status of application
  • Appeal a decision
  • Set up or change your direct deposit
  • Print proof of benefits

Support is available by phone. You can call field offices for certain transactions or (800) 772-1213.

  • Field Offices:
    • Field offices are currently accepting disability and survivor applications for disabilities that may interfere with employment. If eligible, you could receive:
      • Presumptive disability or blindness payments
      • Emergency advance payments
      • Immediate payments
      • Expedited reinstatement cases

  • National 800 Number: (800) 722-1213 or TTY: (800) 325-0778
    • 800# operations can assist with limited transactions:
      • Process applications for wounded warriors, terminally ill individuals, individuals with severe disability, and other social security disability claims.
      • Resolving payment related issues request to reinstate benefits, direct deposit changes, change of address, or changes in representative payees.
